Do You Need a Car in Marrakech? When Renting Makes Sense, and Where to Park

By Badr MellalUpdated Oct 6, 2026

Not for the medina, yes for day trips. When a car pays for itself, where to park outside the walls, and the hybrid plan most travellers should use.

Half the advice online says a car in Marrakech is pointless, the other half says you cannot see Morocco without one. Both are right, because they answer different trips. Here is the honest version, from a rental company that would happily rent you a car you do not need, and would rather you rented the one you do.

The short answer

  • Staying inside the medina for 2 or 3 days? You do not need a car. You cannot drive in most of the medina, and parking costs money every night.
  • Doing day trips (Atlas, Ourika, Essaouira, Agafay, Ouzoud)? A car usually pays for itself from the second trip.
  • Travelling as a family or with luggage? A car is far easier than taxis and shared transfers.
  • Continuing to the desert or the coast? A car changes the trip completely.
  • Best of both: spend the medina days without a car, then pick one up for the days you leave the city.

When you do NOT need a car

  • The medina is for walking. Most lanes are too narrow for a car, and the ones that are not are full of scooters and carts.
  • Riads are inside the medina. You park outside and walk in, sometimes with a porter for luggage.
  • Short distances: Jemaa el-Fna, the souks, Bahia Palace and the Saadian Tombs are all walkable from each other.
  • Petits taxis are cheap for Gueliz, Hivernage or the Menara gardens. Insist on the meter or agree the price first.

When a car is worth it

  • Ourika valley and the Atlas foothills: about an hour out, and much better without a fixed tour schedule.
  • Essaouira: around 2h30 each way. With a car you leave early and come back late, or stay the night.
  • Ouzoud waterfalls: around 2h30, a long day by organised tour, an easy day by car.
  • Agafay desert: 40 minutes, perfect for sunset, when the tours are already heading back.
  • Imlil and Toubkal trailheads: about 1h30, and public transport is slow.
  • Going on to Merzouga or the Dades: see our guide, our Atlantic coast road trip itinerary.

Two day trips by private tour usually cost more than a day of car rental plus fuel, for two or more people. That is the tipping point.

Driving in Marrakech: what it is really like

  • Busy but manageable. Traffic moves in a fluid way rather than a strict one. Keep a steady speed, do not brake for every scooter, and use your indicators.
  • Scooters come from everywhere, including the wrong way. Check mirrors before turning.
  • Roundabouts: priority is not always respected, so approach slowly.
  • Avoid the medina ring roads at dusk, when traffic peaks.
  • An automatic car helps if you are not used to a clutch in stop and go traffic.

Where to park

  • Guarded car parks near the medina gates: Bab Doukkala, Bab Laksour and the Jemaa el-Fna area. Paid per night, with an attendant.
  • Hotels in Gueliz and Hivernage often have private parking. Ask when you book.
  • Street parking with a gardien: a small note for the day or night is normal. Agree the amount first.
  • Never leave bags visible in the car, anywhere.

The hybrid plan that works best

  1. Days 1 and 2: medina, souks, palaces, food. No car.
  2. Day 3: pick the car up in the morning. We deliver it to your riad, your hotel or the airport.
  3. Days 3 to 5: Ourika, Agafay, Essaouira, or on to the desert.
  4. Return the car in Marrakech, or in another city if you are flying home from there.

Renting for 3 days instead of 5 saves more than hunting for a cheaper daily rate.

Renting in Marrakech with Bandy's Cars

  • Delivery to your riad, hotel or Marrakech Menara Airport.
  • Digital contract, and photos of the car at pickup and return.
  • Debit card or cash accepted, no credit card required.
  • No deposit with Premium insurance on standard categories: see no deposit car rental.
  • Mostly automatic cars, which makes city traffic much easier.

Frequently asked questions

Is it worth renting a car in Marrakech?

Not for the medina itself. Yes as soon as you leave the city, especially for two or more day trips.

Can you drive into the Marrakech medina?

Mostly no. You park at a guarded car park outside the walls and walk in.

Is driving in Marrakech difficult for tourists?

It is busy rather than dangerous. Drive calmly, watch for scooters, and take an automatic if you are unsure.

How much is parking in Marrakech?

Guarded car parks charge a modest amount per night, and street guardians a small note. Agree the price before leaving the car.

Can I rent for only part of my stay?

Yes. Many customers take the car on the day they start their trips, and return it before their last medina day.
